A Religious Debate

I have taken part in a few intense religious conversations in my life. They are usually arguing the differences between Christian denominations and what is ‘right’. No one ever wins these arguments because they are solely based on opinion. One Christian debate that I particularly remember took place on Christmas-Eve last year. It was between my dad and my uncle. I wasn’t there when the conversation started but I soon noticed once they were yelling back and forth. From what I understand, they were fighting over the book that explores Jesus’ existence. I’m not exactly sure of the details but before anyone could stop them, my uncle and dad were fighting for their own opinion. My dad is extremely religious and feels very strongly about Jesus and God. My uncle is also religious but is probably more influenced by what he reads. My dad was trying to get my uncle to understand his point of view but when a subject as sensitive as religion is brought up, no one can persuade another. The fight on Christmas Eve never really ended. They ended up in separate rooms to cool off. It started off as an innocent conversation but beliefs were criticized and they both got defensive. I have found that in many instances this is the case. Religion is never a ‘safe’ topic to discuss. It often brings up interesting and new ideas about a well known concept but unless both parties agree, convincing someone of your beliefs never goes well.

  1. I don't know that I would say that people are never persuaded in a conversation about religion, but I certainly agree that it is a sensitive one. That shouldn't stop us from having these discussions, though, because a life beyond this one may the most important topic of our existence.
