I’m sure you’re overwhelmed right now. It’s the first week of classes and you have no idea what is going on. Now you’re sitting in English class getting an overview of what to expect. This class isn’t too much different than you high school class. There is a lot of analyzing and writing but don’t be intimidated by the focus subject of the class. Religion in Secular Media did not sound interesting at all to me. Honestly when I found out the subject for this course I was dreading it. I figured that the class discussions would be debates about religious topics and writing assignments would be analyzing the bible. Once the course got under way, I was pleasantly surprised. The theme of this class just makes it easier to pick a subject to write about. Sometimes the discussions in class get a little heavy and at other times it might seem strange to create an opinion about a topic that you have never even heard of before. I suggest you give it a chance though. You aren’t graded on your views but instead on how well you analyze a particular form of media.
I would recommend a few things to you. First, make sure you get assignments done on time. It seems obvious but blog posts and comments are usually due at midnight on a Friday or Saturday. I strongly suggest you get those done during the day. Also, don’t put papers off until the last minute. Pretty much everything in this course is submitted online and is due by 11:59 pm. This may cause you to think that you can start a paper at 9:00 at night. Again, I wouldn’t recommend that. Overall this class is pretty straight-forward. Complete the thematic readings on Carmen, turn in papers and blogs on time, and participate in discussions in class. It’s only 10 weeks so you’ll be fine!

Haha yeah I can definitely relate to the whole "don't wanna sit through religions debates" thing. You're right though, the class was definitely not bad, especially as English class go. And yeah procrastination is probably not the best route to go. It is the road most traveled though. Haha good post/letter. I think it would ease the mind of many a freshmen.
ReplyDeleteI think you pointed out some really important things. For example, the fact that we are graded on how we analyze certain media is very helpful to know. Also, like you said, it is definitely important to prioritize and work on your assignments a little bit at a time.
ReplyDeleteIt’s hilarious that you mention starting papers at nine the night they are due, that was my original designated time to start papers at the start of the quarter. Needless to say it didn't work out. I can relate to dreading the topic of religion too, religious debates are not my forte. Reading letters such as yours before this class would have eased my mind for sure. Good post.
